"Kiss the Future" was always going to be a hard act
to follow, especially after such a short time. That
considered, this is a very fine effort indeed. I said
that KtF was the best first sampler since "Yellow",
well this is definitely up there with "Orange".
ThereÆs plenty of Dino in "Electrosect", which canÆt
be a bad thing and is no surprise as the album is
compiled by the workaholic himself.
ItÆs usually a bad sign when an album starts with the
best track, but "Electrosect" is compiled by the
master mayhem moulder and as usual heÆs got it right.
It works because the opener from Phreaky (Dino, Avi
Algranati and Ofer) immediately creates a mood of
expectation, lulls you with some menacing riffs that
still manage to be warm and cosy and then wisks you
off to that illusive higher plane.
From there Serge and (new) co. keep the rumble
bubbling nicely till the second Dino track (here with
brother Andy) gets down to some serious brain
tweezing. With a name like "Tortured Brain" you canÆt
complain that you havenÆt been warned. Now that your
mind is sufficiently mashed, itÆs time for the meat
of the sandwich. The Apocalyptic (Ofer and new co.)
and Tim Shuldt (the reincarnation of Wagner?) tracks
are solid dance floor stompers as youÆd expect from
such masters of the technocolour arts. The really
clever trick is putting Paul JacksonÆs beautiful
slinky soulful sexy "Baby Blue" right in there with
the meat - like a touch of pesto mayonnaise to really
bring out the flavour.
EBSG (or ebsg) is Michael Kohlbecker (Saafi Brothers)
with Simon G. "Take a Ride" is a nice slice of early
nineties retro - the sort of stuff John Om used to
play on Touchdown Radio. Nice as a novelty item,
letÆs hope it doesnÆt start a trend.
The penultimate track and itÆs everyoneÆs favourite
schizophrenic DJ again, proving that it is possible
to be part of three different ensembles and do
justice to all of them. Having fulfilled their
contractual obligations to BBR to produce an album
(after four years!!!!) Cydonia are free to pursue
their natural (Brighton oriented) life at last.
Presumably all future Cydonialia will be on Atomic.
WhatÆs this? MWNN as the final track?! DonÆt panic,
itÆs an ambient offering from the man (with no name)
who occupies, and indeed defines, the boundary
between Trance and Progressive House. Does this mean
Martin lives in No ManÆs land? Answers to the editor
please.
